MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) — Attorney General Dana Nessel has officially released her new Hate Crimes Unit inside the Department of Attorney General’s Criminal Division.
Assistant Attorney General Sunita Doddamani has been appointed as a lead prosecutor within the unit, and Special Agent David Dwyre has been named lead investigator.
“Hate itself isn’t always a crime, and our civil liberties guard the proper to speak approximately even the most terrible things,” stated Nessel. But my Office will act when a crime is devoted to someone or property and is influenced by a wrongdoer’s bias towards a specific institution. To do this, we intend to paint with each federal and neighborhood government to ensure these crimes are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest quantity possible beneath the law.”
Nessel is encouraging members of the public and other law enforcement organizations to contact the Hate Crimes Unit if they have the know-how of or are a sufferer of a criminal offense encouraged through hate.
Department of Attorney General officials will comply with every credible tip and launch impartial investigations. At the same time, enough cause exists and could provide departmental sources to assist our local and federal regulation enforcement partners.
“Hate crimes aren’t simply an assault on a specific character; however, a message to an entire institution,” Nessel delivered. “That’s why they’re so unfavorable to communities, and we want to associate with our nearby government if we hope to eliminate them. I’m happy to have the possibility as Attorney General to put a spotlight on this crucial problem.”
